How Happy People Get That Way - and You Can Too!

Are you frequently anxious and discouraged by the daily pressures and obstacles you face?

Have you sat in wonder at how some individuals can handle life's difficulties with ease and optimism? Perhaps you have been frustrated by how a friend or relative can see the best in life simply because you don't understand where they get their 'eternal sunshine' from.

Don't worry - you're not alone. There are many people who find that much of the enjoyment of life that they once had has been taken away by pressure of work, hectic family routines and lack of energy. If you've forgotten how to take a positive look at life, or if you've faced obstacles such as illness or loss of work that have overshadowed much of your life, try to bring joy back into life using these steps:

STAY CONNECTED:

Don't let your rush to get everything done and keep on top of it all make you forget to stay connected with your family and friends.

Scientific studies have shown that happy people have good relationships, so why not call a friend, go for a coffee or arrange a treat for your wife, husband or children? This interaction can give you a tremendous energy boost and help you to set new priorities that really bring you joy.

REMIND YOURSELF ABOUT THE GOOD:

It may sound silly or pointless at the moment, but taking time out to think about what IS good in your life, rather than what's bad, really can increase your happiness.

Is something at work worrying you or do you feel down about how you've been dealing with your kids? Thinking about what you've done RIGHT will combat these feelings. If you feel you have spoken badly to someone, pick up the phone. Put it right and be happy. Acknowledging where you can improve is really good for you, but beating yourself up about mistakes or unfairness will break your spirit.

GET A HOBBY:

Are you bored with life? Sometimes all we need is a little amusement or diversion to let happiness return. Challenge yourself and enrich your life with interests outside of your daily routine. This can bring back a zest to you life that may have been missing.

DO SOMETHING FOR SOMEONE ELSE:

I know it's easy, but don't become absorbed with your own problems. Looking beyond yourself and seeing how you can help others can bring great feelings of satisfaction and joy. many disbelieve this until they try it!

It doesn't have to be much. Holding the door open for someone, bringing your colleague a coffee or picking up some groceries for an elderly neighbor can help you feel good, and remind you that happiness frequently comes from your own actions and attitudes.

If, despite all your efforts, you feel that your lack of enjoyment in your life may be linked to one or more serious conditions such as anxiety or depression, please consult your physician about what you must do to get back on track.

"Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action".
Benjamin Disraeli.

"When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us".
Helen Keller
